Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST) is an advanced high school within Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), Virginia.  Our diverse and unique curricular offerings have presented challenges for implementing new Science Classroom Safety Standards and Chemical Hygiene Plans. The presentation will highlight unique school attributes, such as our Senior Research Program, include discussions about the FCPS Chemical Safety expectations, and current challenges and strategies used for implementing them throughout TJHSST.  Among the unique attributes of TJHSST is the Senior Research program which includes fourteen different, often post-AP level, research labs. Offerings include both physical and natural sciences, computing-based, and technology-based.  The research labs offer students opportunities for project-based learning most commonly beyond what they would do in advanced placement courses.  Considering the advanced nature of many research projects, TJHSST is faced with unique challenges for lab and chemical safety.  Discussions will highlight efforts to improve the fostering of lab safety throughout all grade levels by both students and staff.
