This poster describes a different analytical approach in conducting comparative studies on plastic films that involves the direct testing and evaluation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released from the films instead of the traditional Extractable and Leachable (E&L) method typically employed. Thermal desorption - gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) and Electrospray ionization / mass spectrometry (ESI/MS) analytical techniques were used to investigate four different commercial plastic films and their laminated layers before and after gamma irradiation. This poster will present the following: 1) Systematic TD-GC/MS study of plastic films at various temperatures to deliver the comparative study to mirror the E/L test concept , 2) The analyses of derivation products from additives in these plastic films, 3) Identification of stabilizers (additives) present in the solvent extracts of these plastic films using Electrospray ionization / mass spectrometry (ESI/MS), 4) TD-GC/MS analyses of irradiated exemplary stabilizers (or additives) to identify the source of different components of VOCs released from these films.
