Pd and its alloys are important materials used in hydrogen energy area, because of their excellent characteristics in hydrogen storage and detection. And as well known, metallic glasses possess extraordinary mechanical properties and unique internal structure, which would be of advantage to hydrogen-related applications. Here, we combine advantages of these two materials and studied hydrogen permeation properties of a Pd-based metallic glass – Pd71.5Cu12Si16.5, which has a relatively high Tx among the Pd-based metallic glasses. High Tx means the glassy structure can be remained to a high temperature, which would enlarge the temperature range of the application. In this work, Pd71.5Cu12Si16.5 metallic glass ribbons with width of about 10mm were prepared by arc melting and copper roller spinning. Fully glassy state of the ribbons is confirmed by X-ray diffraction spectra using the conventional X-ray diffractometer and also short wavelength X-ray stress analyzer. The hydrogen permeation properties of the Pd71.5Cu12Si16.5 metallic glass and its crystallized counterpart were tested with direct permeation method. The hydrogen permeation rates for the metallic glass form are slightly lower beyond the supercooled liquid region owing to the formation of nanocrystalline structure which supply a large number of grain boundaries. However, it is obviously higher in the supercooled liquid region, which could be explained by the increasing free volumes introduced during isothermal stage in this range. Comparing with the increased boundaries, the introduced free volumes show much stronger effect in improving the hydrogen permeability.
