In the first part, a biomimetic total synthesis of homodimericin A will be discussed. Two cascade transformations, an oxidative dimerization cascade and a Diels-Alder/vinylogous aldol cascade, delivered homodimericin A and its C8 epimer. Key intermediates in the biosynthetic proposal were identified, and Clardy's biosynthetic proposal was supported with experimental results. In the second part, a biosynthetic proposal of sweriledugenin A will be discussed. <i>Swertia</i> natural products were reported to have anti-HBV activities. The synthesis of monomer swermirin and efforts toward biomimetic dimerization to synthesize sweriledugenin A will be disclosed.
