The electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) process is an emerging electrochemical advanced oxidation process (AOP) that has shown great potential in water treatment. The E-peroxone process combines conventional ozonation with an electrolysis process to electrochemically produce of H2O2 in situ from cathodic oxygen reduction. The in-situ generated H2O2 can enhance O3 transformation to ●OH, and thus greatly improve the abatement of ozone-resistant pollutants. In addition, the in-situ generated H2O2 can effectively inhibit bromate formation, which has been a major drawback associated with conventional ozonation during the treatment of bromide-containing water. Therefore, the E-peroxone process can considerably improve the performance of water treatment in many aspects compared to conventional ozonation. However, because chloride can be electrochemically oxidized to chlorine at the anode, the E-peroxone process may lead to the formation of chlorinated by-products, which has yet to be evaluated for the application of this technology in water treatment. To this end, this study investigated the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) during the E-peroxone treatment of a surface water. The effects of main operational parameters (e.g., applied ozone doses and currents) were evaluated systematically. The results show that due to the scavenging of HOCl by H2O2, the E-peroxone process will not cnosiderably increase the formation of THMs and HAAs during water treatment compared to conventional ozonaton. Therefore, the E-peroxone process can provide a safe alternative for oxidative water treatment.
