TThe ISIS neutron and muon facility is ISIS is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Its two target stations give an unrivalled breadth of neutron science capabilities and have provided the blueprint for future neutron scattering facilities worldwide. ISIS supports a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists for research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and health care, through to nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers, and on to the fundamental studies of materials. The extensive characterisation facilities include neutron and muon instruments that can determine structure, molecular motion and ionic mobility at extremes of temperature and pressure. Neutron tomography Neutron scattering can be used to characterise both atomic position (neutron diffraction) and atomic motion (neutron spectroscopy) of hydrogen atoms due to the large incoherent and coherent scattering from hydrogen and deuterium, respectively. The highly penetrating nature of the neutron also allows us to surround the material of interest with complex sample environment facilitating multiple, simultaneous, characterisations under in-operando conditions. This presentation will highlight a number of different neutron techniques for hydrogenous materials characterisation, detailing the types of information that may be obtained from each and will focus on the use of a number of novel sample environments designed for simultaneous characterisation experiments. These sample environments, designed and manufactured at the Rutherford Laboratory, allow the functional properties of interest (conductivity, kinetics, thermodynamics etc.) to be investigated simultaneously with the structure or molecular dynamics. Here we will present case studies on the simultaneous investigation of dielectric properties and structure in chemical energy storage materials and ionic conductivity and structure in hydride conductors.
