Conjugated polymers are attracting immense interest for application in new types of displays, solar cells and diagnostic sensors. The chains of traditional conjugated polymers are terminated by groups at the ends that have been shown to greatly influence the physical properties of the polymers in solution and the bulk. These end groups have also been associated with sites of degradation and charge trapping that lead to poor performance in devices made from these materials. Cyclic conjugated polymers are intriguing targets for the synthetic chemist as they have no chain ends and they are predicted to show higher performance in devices plus interesting optical and electronic properties.<br/>This paper will discuss how to prepare high purity, high molecular weight cyclic and telechelic phenylenevinylene polymers by ring opening or ring expansion metathesis reactions and the optical properties of these interesting materials.  It will describe the properties of the telechelic conjugated polymers and the ring closure of these materials to more complex topologies such as dumbbell structures and trefoil structures.
