The widespread use of electronic products has drawn increased attention to their impact on the environment. In many countries this has resulted in the adaptation of regulations affecting the wastes generated, and substances and energy used by electronic products. IEC 62321-3-2 specifies the screening analysis of halogen (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine) in homogeneous materials found in polymers and electronics by combustion ion chromatography (CIC). CIC provides a fast and reliable method for measuring the halogen content of various consumer products and their waste streams. CIC uses the thermochemical decomposition of organic matter in the presence of oxygen (oxidative pyrolysis) to convert the analytes of interest to gases. The combustion by-product gases, including HX and SO2/SO3, are passed through an aqueous absorbing solution and directly injected into the IC instrument, thereby eliminating the sample matrix and any associated interferences. The fully automated process of CIC saves time and labor, increases reproducibility, and eliminates the need to dispose of hazardous chemicals used in acid digestions or back extractions. Our study describes a CIC method to determine halogen in polymers and electronics. Samples were homogenized by cryogenic grinding, combusted in the Mitsubishi® AQF-2100H system, and then directly injected into a Dionex Integrion HPIC system with a Thermo Scientific™ Dionex™ IonPac™ AS17-C column set. Individual halogen can be precisely and accurately determined in polymers and electronics this method (Figure 1). The calibration curves for halogen over the range of 0.1-8 mg/L for fluoride, bromide, and iodide, and 0.005-8 mg/L for chloride showed good linearity with the coefficient of determination being 0.9996, 0.9999, 0.9997 and 0.9999 respectively. The good precision and accuracy were also achieved by our CIC method.
