The activation of C-H bonds in organic compounds is essential for many reactions, such as alkane dehydrogenation, alkene oxidation, alcohol dehydrogenation and dehydration, aldehyde condensation, and carboxylic acid ketonization. Experimental studies have shown that metal cations present at the surface of a bulk metal oxide or present as isolated metal oxo or hydroxide species grafted onto a support or as extraframework species in a zeolite can serve as catalytically active centers. The ease of C-H bond activation depends on the strength of the C-H bond in the reactant and the ability of the catalyst to accommodate the fragments formed upon C-H bond cleavage. This talk will present several illustrations of the role of catalyst composition and structure and reactant composition and structure taken from recent experimental and theoretical studies conducted by the author. These examples will include the dehydrogenation of low molecular weight alkanes, the dehydrogenation and oxidation of alkenes, the dehydrogenation of alcohols, and the ketonization of carboxylic acids. The common features in each of these reactions and the role of catalyst composition and structure will be discussed.<br/>
