Municipal waste, such as spent cooking oil, represents a valuable resource that can be used to produce transportation fuels like synthetic gasoline and diesel, and to generate other petroleum-based products. High-school, community college, and university campuses are places where such waste is generated in large amounts and is generally disposed. We are developing a process for transforming spent cooking oil into biodiesel that can be used in our school's generators. The objective is to increase the sustainability efforts in our school and to reduce costs by utilizing a resource that is readily available and that otherwise would have been slated for disposal. In this study, we present initial results of a bench-scale transesterification reaction using solid acid catalysts.
