Techniques will be described to synthesize low coordinate meal complexes of various metals by co-deposition of elemental metal and (oxidizing) redox active ligand; these ML monomers should form chain polymers with regular incorporation of metal between newly reduced anionic ligand.  Structure is determined by STM in combination with DFT calculations, and degree of redox electron transfer is assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of numerous elements present in the surface assemblies.  A key component to be discussed is a tetraaza-anthraquinone, which can accept up to four electrons from elemental metals and has donor sites to host up to four metal atoms.  Attempts to establish the products of reaction of these surface assemblies with N<sub>2</sub>O and carbene sources will be described.  Reactivity of V and Fe species will be contrasted.<br/>
