Aqueous stream of fast pyrolysis of wood biomass was considered as feedstock for monomer synthesis. GC-MS analysis indicated the presence of aliphatic organic compounds in aqueous phase, including aldehydes, ketones and alcohols. Olefination of bio-oil components was performed via different routes. Aldehydes and ketones were converted to methylene-analogues via Wittig reaction. Alcohols and phenols were reacted with methacryloyl chloride to carry out methacrylation of hydroxyl groups of the organic compounds. In another approach, maleic anhydride was used for derivetization of bio-oil hydroxyl compounds. The bio-oil-based olefins were characterized by FTIR and DSC. Olefinated bio-oil was polymerized to produce plastic films. The resulting polymers showed a wide range of properties depending on the olefination route. Polyolefin synthesis proved to be a potential, efficient method of valorization of aqueous phase of bio-oil. Bio-oil based polyolefins can be used in the biomedical and agricultural applications such as hydrogels and superabsorbent polymers.
