This presentation elaborates two original designs of laboratory teaching modules that are offered to undergraduate students majored in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering. These two teaching modules provide unparalleled exposure to cutting edge nanotechnology and hands-on experiences in nanomaterial manipulation, magnetophoretic device operation and membrane filtration. Multiple sustainability concepts and sustainable design principles are incorporated in the course materials to highlight the need to advance traditional technologies or processes that suffer inadequate sustainability in biomass or chemical separation, including coagulation, flocculation, and membrane filtration. The shortcomings of traditional technologies in sustainability are discussed to inspire students of thinking of innovative processes that may potentially address the challenging issues. The presented two laboratory techniques on magnetic nanoparticles and electrochemical membrane filtration are further elaborated to students to elucidate the mechanisms of these sustainable separation processes.
