In order to fully utilize hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) to produce value-added hydrochars from a large variety of feedstocks, we must understand how process conditions (e.g., temperature, reaction time, solids concentration) determine product characteristics. Conversely, research on applications must identify which char properties are required to achieve successful operation. Currently work is being carried out to identify methods to reverse the unsustainable movement of nutrients from our soils to the atmosphere or aquatic environments. Current practices in agriculture must be redesigned to recycle nutrients. This presentation will discuss the potential for intervention in the nutrient cycle via the hydrothermal carbonization process. The characteristics and mass flows required from the point of view of char production and use will be explored.
