Chemical reactions that occur at the solid-water interface have a profound influence on the occurrence, mobility and effects of chemicals in the environment.  They are also often the basis for the removal or sequestration of chemicals in treatment systems and remediation strategies.  Yet neither the understanding gained from interfacial geochemistry nor even the development of reliable technologies provides any guarantee of effective implementation.  These issues will be examined in the context of arsenic occurrence in groundwater in South Asia and the lack of successful interventions to protect human health.
