Arsenic (As) is a common groundwater contaminant. The fate and transport of As in groundwater was primarily affected by sorption and redox transformation processes that can complexly interplay with Fe and S redox chemistry. In this study, we investigated the kinetics of As sorption and redox transformation in coupling with the dynamics of S and Fe redox chemistry. Chemical experiments and microscopic and spectroscopic characterization such as using XRD, XPS, FTIR, and Cs-corrected STEM were collectively used to explore the dynamic interactions between As, S, and Fe. The results indicated that the molar ratio of S vs Fe, secondary FeS mineral formation, and As desorption and reabsorption collectively control the kinetics of As sorption and desorption.
