Highly efficient molecular iodine-catalyzed one-pot approach for cyclization and chalcogenation of enaminones were performed to access 3-Se/S-4<i>H</i>-chromen-4-ones using diorganoyl dichalcogenides under solvent free conditions. This approach afforded the desired products regioselectively in up to 92 % yields using an equivalent amount of DMSO as an oxidant in the absence of a metal catalyst and in an inert atmosphere. The reaction features are high yields, based on atom economy, ease of scale-up to gram scale, and metal- and solvent-free approach.
