New hindered amide base for aryne generation is described. Both aryl triflates and aryl halides can be used as aryne precursors. The utility of the base is demonstrated in aryne insertion into element-element sigma bonds affording products in good to excellent yields. Currently used methodology employs lithium tetramethylpiperidide base which adds to arynes decreasing reaction yields and requiring excess of aryl halide reagents. The new lithium amide minimizes aryne reaction with base.
