Our programs are interested in defining how solid | liquid interactions impact rates of solar fuels production and solar cell photovoltages. We have, for example, measured an enhancement in photovoltage where intermolecular halogen bonding interactions exist between a nucleophilic electrolyte species and a photo-oxidized dye immobilized on a titanium oxide surface. Moreover, we have found that the photovoltage is responsive to interactions that exist only between the oxidized dye and the electrolyte. These results are surprising in that it shows that a distinct minority of dyes on the surface (&lt;1 in 100,000) have a profound effect on device characteristics. These and other data showing orbital pathways for electron transfer reactions will be presented to highlight the importance of engineering intermolecular interactions for energy conversion schemes.
