After teaching an introductory chemistry course for health profession majors for six years, beginning in 2006 I succesfully reformed the classroom instruction into an active learning environment. Common obstacles that will be discussed during this session include: 1) How can you get students to keep up with the homework? 2) How can you engage students during class? 3) How do you get students to read the textbook? and  4) How can do you measure an improvement in learning? In this talk I offer a set of solutions to these obstacles, information from the science of learning on why they work, and provide some data that convinced me that students were learning more after I made the switch to active learning.<br/>
