A turn-on fluorescent chemosensor (NS510) was developed for selectively visualizing high concentrations of norepinephrine within the secretory. The sensor exhibits great selectivity (more than 200 fold) for labeling norepinephrine over alkyl amines (e.g., glutamate etc.). Moreover, norepinephrine is differentiated from other catecholamines (dopamine and epinephrine) by the enhancement and quenching of fluorescence emission. NS510 was employed to monitor exocytosis of norepinephrine-enriched chromaffin cells by total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM).
