There has been a growing trend in bioanalysis toward the utilization of micro extraction techniques for sample isolation and transportation. Not only are there ethical advantages for test subjects, but there is also an interest in cost reduction associated with sampling. This presentation provides an overview of the advancement of biocompatible solid phase micro extraction (BioSPME) as a viable means for sample preparation in bioanalysis. Techniques such as in-vivo PK studies, drug protein binding, direct tissue analysis, and direct analysis will be explored through this presentation. Model sets of compounds are used to establish the utility of BioSPME across a range of biological matrices. The unique feature of the BioSPME technique enable direct analysis of biological samples without the need for protein precipitation, centrifugation or digestion. The BioSPME technique allows for isolation of target analytes while minimizing co-extraction of sample matrix allowing for more sensitive and robust bioanalysis. The unique properties of the BioSPME sampling technique enable techniques such as direct MS analysis to allow for the rapid screening and detection of targeted compounds. This overview will highlight the capabilities of this novel sample preparation technique, and demonstrate how this technique will shape the future of biological sampling.
