In the past few years, clinical investigations in nuclear medicine using targeted alpha therapy (TAT) have increased for the treatment of a variety of diseases (e.g., cancer, viruses). The unique decay series of 225Ac combines a mixture of particles (alpha and beta) and gamma rays as it cascades to ground state 209Bi. Compared to a single therapeutic emitter, such as 90Y, 89Sr, 166Ho, or 177Lu, the overall 225Ac decay series highlights an important radiotherapeutic distinction to deliver a broad spectrum of particles with varying tissue penetration ranges and ionization profiles to yield a high localized dose. Current isotope production/purification routes and dose measurement methodologies involved in actinium pharmaceuticals will be discussed.
