The essence of chemical transformations lies in the making and breaking of covalent bonds. In contrast to the plethora of known organic molecules, the number of compounds containing electron-precise B–B bonds is still small. It will be disclosed that the deprotonation (cf. 1) and reduction (cf. 2-4) of aryl(hydro)boranes provide versatile new access routes to these kinds of compounds (Figure 1). During reduction, bond formation can be accompanied by rearrangement reactions. The degree of skeletal rearrangement can be influenced by careful control of the reaction conditions. In terms of applications, the reduced boranes 1-5 can act as either reducing agents or nucleophiles to form B–element bonds.
