During this demonstration, the paramagnetism of molecular oxygen is used to separate O2(l) from a cryogenic mixture condensed from the surrounding air. This inexpensive and uncomplicated procedure allows the collection of small amounts of liquid oxygen to be safely examined. Students will verify the direct generation of "condensed air" (albeit not an "80-20 mixture") over a 25-minute period and subsequent separation of the oxygen component. Although of greatest interest to general chemistry or introductory chemistry courses, this technique may also be applicable to general-interest audiences and more advanced studies in MO bonding theory.
