Due to the increasing global energy demand, it is important to apply principle of natural photosynthetic process for light harvesting to build multicomponent photoactive devices. Synthesizing molecular architectures comprised of electron donors, such as fullerene, electron acceptor, such as functionalized porphyrin, and π-conjugated molecular spacers and understanding their energy and electron transfer process is one of the vital objectives. The electronic properties of these molecules make them potentially useful in constructing artificial photoactive devices capable of mimicking natural photosynthetic process. In this work, a new b-functionalized conjugated free-base porphyrin-zinc porphyrin dyad was successfully synthesized using heck cascade reaction and bromination chemistry. In order to build a donor-acceptor system, a phenyl imidazole functionalized C60 was added to the system which is coordinated to the zinc porphyrin. Based on time resolved emission and transient absorption results, in the absence of ImC60, excitation of zinc porphyrin leads to energy transfer to free-base porphyrin. Moreover, in the presence of ImC60, excitation of zinc porphyrin results in simultaneous energy transfer to free-base porphyrin and electron transfer to C60.
