Photoresponsive organoboron compounds have attracted much recent research interest. Several new boron-based systems that undergo facile photoisomerization/photochromism have been discovered recently. The nature of substituents on boron and the p-conjugated backbone have been found to play a critical role in photoreaction pathways. This presentation will focus on several new photo-responsive boron-based systems established by our group and their unique reactivities and applications. Photocyclization reactions and photo-insertion reactions of boron into arene C-C bonds will be presented. Mechanistic aspects of these unusual reactions will be discussed.
