Recovering hydrocarbons from tight shale plays located throughout the Americas continues to be a growing opportunity for integrated oil & gas operators. Hydraulic fracturing is the well stimulation technique responsible for gaining access to these resources. Fluids used in this process contain water, sand, and chemicals such as friction reducing polymers, biocides, various inhibitors and other additives. A successful fracture requires all the fluid components to be compatible and effective under dynamic conditions. Therefore, sufficient analytical methods are required to qualify these additives at the lab scale and in the field. This presentation will review current methods used to qualify fracturing fluid chemicals and highlight the potential strengths and gaps in available analytical methods.
