At each step of education and career, women continue to leave chemistry for other subjects, jobs and pursuits. There are many reasons provided for this exodus, but one of note remains the limited number of female leaders in the field. This presentation will focus on the critical value of female mentors and role models toward increasing the number of women who pursue chemistry careers, the central importance of scientific excellence toward this intent, and the wide array of activities in industry and academia we have used at Merck to target this essential goal.
