Active learning classrooms take many forms. From occasional imbedded questions, to fully flipped courses. In massive lecture courses of 350+ students, this generally requires the implementation of technology. In this talk, I will compare the use of different types of technology used in different versions of a general chemistry course taught at the University of Califronia, Irvine. In active learning lectures, this takes the form of participation-based gamified options. While in partially and fully flipped classes this requires a more robust choice in technology, such as IClickers or LearningCatalytics. Each system used will be compared and contrasted for its benefits and flaws. Challenges and practical tips for overcoming and avoiding these challenges will be discussed. Challenges and responses to the challenges will include addressing student concerns, working with your university's technical staff, and picking the complexity level that is right for you.
