Alkanes episodically enter the marine environment through both natural seeps and anthropogenic events.  Microorganisms exist in these environments that can use alkanes as their sole source of carbon and energy.   Nine enzymes have been identified that can catalyze the oxidation of alkanes.  This talk will review these enzymes and what is known about their active site structures, mechanisms,  and functions, highlighting recent work from our lab, and survey the genomic and metagenomic databases to draw conclusions about their relative abundances in sequenced microorganisms and published metagenomic studies.  <br/>
