A two quarter sequence for biochemistry was designed at Stanford university for students majoring in biology. The biochemistry sequence was revamped and modified from the existing biochemistry course, taken by chemistry, engineering, and biology sudents, because of below average student performances and low course evaluations. The new course was designed with a stronger active learning component by incorporating the GIG model (Group-Individual-Group) and case studies to emphasize the relevance of biochemistry in medicine while fostering group interactions and individual accountability. Research was conducted to assess the merits of the course structure, and to analyze factors such as background preparation and students' perception of their abilities in general and organic chemistry for rationalizing and predicting success in biochemistry.
