Molecular Solar Thermal Energy Storage (MOST) systems are based on molecules that absorb sunlight and photoconverts to a high energy isomer. The stored energy can be released (as heat) on demand by applying e.g. a catalyst (see Figure 1). The norbornadiene (NBD) – quadricyclane (QC) system is one example of compounds with potential use in MOST systems (Figure 1).<br/>New norbornadienes were synthesized and characterized in order to create a deeper understanding of the structure-property relation in these systems. A hybrid device that combines MOST and solar water heating was built and tested. The built device is an important step towards realizing new technologies for solar energy storage and molecular solar thermal systems.
