Many academic researchers believe that their work has the potential to make a significant impact in the chemical marketplace. With the steady dwindling of federal support and ever greater pressures from reviewers to “demonstrate impact,” commercializing inventions generated in a research lab is becoming a more interesting option to many academics. However, taking inventions from the bench, through the patent process, market entry to a sustainable business, and potential exit, is a path that few chemists receive training. We will present our journey from a regular NSF grant, through the NSF I-Corps program, SBIR Phase I, Phase Ib, Phase II, and venture funding/Phase IIb, discussing some of the issues encountered and lessons learned.
