Wastes generated from fish processing plants have attracted considerable attentions in recent years. For countries with large fish processing industries, it is possible to extract an oil byproduct from the fish waste fraction for use as feedstock for biodiesel production. The present work investigates the properties and oxidation stabilities of biodiesel derived from catfish oil (B100 CFO) generated by the fish processing plants in Vietnam. The biodiesel was produced at ambient temperature by the methanol-acetone co-solvent transesterification process, and purified for analysis. The composition and physicochemical properties of the B100 CFO were measured, including oxygen content, viscosity, density, peroxide value, heat of combustion, and acid number. The low-temperature quality of this biodiesel was also evaluated by investigating its fusion and crystallization process. Modified ASTM D5304 and D2274 tests were employed to study the oxidation process of B100 CFO and the impact of oxidation time on its stability. The influence of oxidation condition and time on the B100 CFO physicochemical properties and low-temperature qualities was also investigated according to ASTM methods. Three oxidation stages were identified in B100 CFO based on the peroxide value change during the modified ASTM D5304 and D2274 tests. The properties of B100 CFO were also compared with that of biodiesel derived from other waste feedstocks.
