The actinides tend to behave as hard Lewis acids, however, it has been shown that thorium forms stable compounds with soft Lewis bases. The unusual hard-soft matching of the metal and ligand makes this a unique system to study, in order to better understand the molecular and electronic structures of these interactions. This talk will focus on the reactivity of thorium-phosphido and arsenido compounds, with an emphasis on the synthesis of compounds containing thorium-pnictogen multiple bonds.
