The key attribute of fabrication processes for next-generation low-cost consumer electronic products composed of unconventional optoelectronic devices such as organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) will be economical solution deposition methodologies. However, to achieve these ends, it is essential that charge transport or power conversion efficiency in the organic (semi)conducting layer(s) of these devices meet rigorous performance and reliability standards for mass production. Solution-based film processing techniques capable of increasing charge carrier mobility, electrical uniformity, and power conversion efficiency by manipulating/aligning the film microstructure typically rely on mechanical stretching, high-temperature rubbing, or shear-printing. Among these methodologies, shear-printing has been of primary interest due to its applicability to large area film fabrication, microstructure control, and enhancement of charge transport/power conversion characteristics. In this study, several shear printing techniques are developed to realize the microstructure control, and the applications in integrated, smart response soft organic electronics. The topics will include: 1. microfluidic flow for aligned conjugated polymer nanofibers with enhanced charge transport; 2. Natural-brush shear printing enabling aggregation control in intentionally selected conjugated polymers for high-performance thin-film transistors and conductors; 3. Synergistic multi-extensional flow design for printed all polymer organic solar cells with over 6.5% PCEs; 4. Integration of these printed conjugated polymer films for smart response soft electronics.
