Fluoride ion is capable to serve as a bridge for magnetic superexchange in molecular and low-dimensional magnetism, albeit due to predominantly ionic nature of chemical bonding between metal cations and F–, the superexchange is usually not very effective. This, however, may dramatically change when fluoride ion is bound to spin-carrying sites in a more covalent manner; notably, this takes place for Ag(2+) spin-½ centers. Consequently, the strength of superexchange via F– may reach ~100 meV in KAgF3 (figure), up to ~180 meV in related CsAgF3 and - as predicted by recent theoretical calculations - even up to ~300 meV in systems featuring [AgF+] infinite chains such as AgFBF4. The latter system simultaneously is predicted to exhibit a very large magnetic anisotropy with J’/J of the order of 10–4 rendering it the best realization of one-dimensional antiferromagnets amongst inorganic compounds. Selected results of our most recent experimental studies of low-dimensional Ag(2+) fluorides will also be discussed.
