Cellular interactions drive diverse aspects of organismal biology, and breakdowns in these networks can potentiate disease. Despite the key role of cell-to-cell communication in human health and disease, the mechanisms by which cells exchange information in vivo are not completely understood. The number of cell types involved, the timing and location of their interactions, and the long-term fates remain poorly characterized in many cases. This is due, in part, to a lack of tools for observing collections of cells in their native habitats. My group is developing novel imaging strategies and chemical tools to “spy” on cells and decipher their communications in vivo. Examples of these probes and methods, along with their application to mouse models of human cancer, will be discussed.
