Metal-support interactions control the dispersion of active sites and their coordination geometry. Far from being chemically inert, the supports have a dramatic influence on the activity and stability of high oxidation state metal oxide active phases. For aluminas, the suppression of Brønsted acidity and the enhancement of Lewis acidity by the use of amorphous or chlorinated phases leads to dramatic improvements in catalyst performance for simple olefin metathesis. This talk will focus on structure-property relationships in the active site precursors that are support-related.
