The study of gold nanoparticles (<b>AuNPs</b>) is one of the most exciting research fields in nanotechnology owing to its extensive applications for biosensor fabrication. Recently, Synthesis of luminescent AuNPs with strong fluorescence emission in visible and near-IR range have been reported and the emission mechanism has been studied; however, exploration of luminescent AuNPs-based fluorescence sensors in physiological environment remains at an early stage. Here, we report a one-pot synthesis of ~2 nm dual-ligand luminescent AuNPs (<b>GM-AuNPs</b>) coated with glutathione and 11-Mercaptoundecanoic acid (11-MUA), which exhibit bright emission at 650 nm and high resistance to serum protein adsorption due to the unique surface chemistry. These GM-AuNPs can be applied as a highly sensitive fluorescence sensor for Chromium (III) ions based on the aggregation-induced quenching mechanism in physiological environment.
