Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) whose organic ligands incorporate specific functionalities that will enhance their interactions with heavy pollutants, such as radioactive groups and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were designed and synthesized. The functionalization of the linkers aims to take advantage of the weak electronic interactions (i.e. Van der Waals, London Dispersion Forces) that occur between the framework and the desired analytes. This strategy allows for achieving active domain separation for mixtures of energy and environmental interest. This work involves a combination of multistep organic synthesis and crystallization of MOFs for the preparation of isoreticular materials that allow for structure-property relationships in complex separations.
