Hydrogen is becoming an increasingly interesting energy carrier for fuel cell applications both at the industrial and the residential and mobile scales. Hydrogen can be produced from a variety of methods such as natural gas reforming, coal gasification and water electrolysis. In addition to conventional hydrogen production, by-product gas from steel making process can be converted to hydrogen using water gas shift process. The WGS(water-gas shift) reaction allows for extra molar hydrogen to be produced from the reaction of carbon monoxide with water. Traditionally, and in most industrial implementations, the WGS reaction is conducted in the thermochemical process using catalysts. Biological WGS(water gas shift reaction) is similar to the conventional WGS but bacteria are used rather than metallic catalysts. Biological water gas shift process is operated at a relatively low temperature compared to themochemical process. Basic reaction of biological water gas shift is below. CO(g) + H2O(l) → H2(g)+ CO2(g) ΔH = 2.8 kJ/mol Thermococcus onnurineus NA1, which is present in various deep-sea hydrothermal vent areas and grows on CO and produces H2, has a unique gene cluster encoding the carbon monoxide dehydrogenase and the hydrogenase. In this study, process modeling and design for hydrogen production process with the capacity of 10,000 ton per year was executed using by-product gas of steel making process based on biological water gas shift reaction using Thermococcus onnurineus NA1.
