Hollow sphere metal oxides have attracted attention in recent years due to high surface area, permeability, and low density.  The ability to synthesize metal oxides with tunable and controllable diameter hollow inner spheres is desired for catalytic applications, chemical sensors, and microcapsule reactors.  Manganese doped iron oxides were synthesized under facile hydrothermal conditions to control inner diameter of the hollow spheres, wall thickness, crystallinity, and concentration of manganese within the spheres.
