In our previous studies, we have optimized conditions for the preparation of radical-mediated thiol-ene crosslinked organo-silica monolithic columns. The polymerization mixture consisted of a monomer (3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, MPTMS), a crosslinker (pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate), PTM), a catalyst (aqueous hydrochloric acid), a porogen (toluene), and an initiator (2,2′-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile), AIBN). The mixture was allowed to thermally polymerize at 80 °C directly in the capillary (100 µm i.d.). The prepared column showed suitability for separation of a mixture of alkylbenzenes in a reverse phase mode at 50% of aqueous acetonitrile. In this study, we hope to improve the separation of these analytes as a result of the introduction of octadecyl functionalities on the pore surface of the monolith. For this task, we will optimize the amount of octadecyl methacrylate (ODM) or 1-octadecanethiol (ODT) added directly to the reaction mixture before the initiation of thermal polymerization.
