An eight step synthesis is being developed to form a molecule containing both the nitrone and 1,4-quinone functionalities held together in close proximity by a sidechain. Related systems are known to undergo intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions to form regioisomeric isoxazolidines under kinetic or thermodynamic control. The resulting isoxazolidines can be reduced to amino alcohols.
