Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as versatile platforms for the design of heterogeneous catalysts that retain many of the beneficial features of homogeneous systems. Our group has been investigating the synthesis and reactivity of MOFs containing linkers based on transition metal diphosphine pincer complexes in order to elucidate the effects of immobilization and site isolation on these species. Several new Zr MOFs containing M-PNNNP metallolinkers (M = PdI, PtI, RuCl2(CO), CoCl3; PNNNP = [2,6-(NHPAr2)2C5H3N]4–, Ar = p-C6H4CO2–) have been synthesized by solvothermal assembly. However, this synthetic approach has been limited by the incompatibility of some pincer metallolinkers with the solvothermal reaction conditions. This presentation will describe our recent efforts to use postsynthetic metal exchange as a means of obtaining pincer MOFs that are not accessible by direct solvothermal synthesis.
