A two-step low-temperature topotactic method was used to insert transition metal-fluoride layers between perovskite blocks of double-layered Dion-Jacobson compounds. Initially, the perovskite hosts, RbLnNb2O7 (Ln = La, Pr), were exchanged with lithium to prepare LiLnNb2O7. These intermediates were then reacted with stoichiometric amounts of the metal fluoride (MF2; M = Mn, Fe, Cu) under static vacuum in sealed Pyrex tubes. The resulting compounds, (MF)LnNb2O7, were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction where Rietveld refinement confirmed the formation of a two-dimensional metal-fluoride network between the perovskite blocks. Details on the synthesis and characterization of this series of compounds will be presented and the new compounds compared to other (MX)LnNb2O7 where X is Cl and Br.
