The design of molecular coordination environments that engender spin anisotropy (single-molecule magnetism; SMM) has seen rapid advancement over the last five years. In particular, exquisite synthetic control of lanthanide crystal fields has facilitated the discovery of ever-more-powerful SMMs. Unfortunately, any alteration of the coordination environment of one of these magnets can have drastic and often catastrophic effects on its properties. Thus, the addition of spin centers or the construction of higher dimensional magnets results in loss of the optimized axial anisotropy. As one approach to this general problem, we have developed a ligand/metal motif that provides reliable anisotropy while simultaneously leaving coordination sites open for the binding multi-topic linkers that mediate magnetic coupling to vary the material dimensionality or couple it into external structures. Since this anisotropy is unique to specific metal/ligand combinations, we refer to it as Metal Ligand Pair Anisotropy (MLPA). This presentation will provide synthetic, magnetic, and computational evidence of an initial Er(III) MLPA fragment and the mononuclear, molecular cluster, higher dimensionality magnetic materials that can be constructed from it.<br/>
