The development of robust first-row transition metal catalyzed C-H activation processes is an important goal in synthetic chemistry as first-row transition metal ions are generally more abundant and less toxic than their 2<sup>nd</sup> and 3<sup>rd</sup> counterparts.  Our group has been developing a family of cobalt catalysts capable of important aerobic oxidation and C-H amination reactions.  This family of catalysts is based on cobalt complexes that incorporate a tridentate trianionic redox-active ligand backbone.  This presentation will describe the synthesis and characterization of this family of catalysts and also discuss our efforts to elucidate the critical reactive intermediates in these processes.  In addition, the presentation will discuss the application of these complexes in a variety of catalytic transformations, including C-H amination reactions and reactions with diazo compounds
